Christmas tree decorations | Modern Christmas tree decorations

<!– From http://www.buzzle.com/editorials/12-23-2004-63339.asp –> <!– google_ad_section_end –>

One of the many origins of ChristmasThe Christmas tree is one of the most popular and cherished Christmas customs. Each year, 35-40 million live trees are purchased and decorated in the United States alone. in other countries, the number should be close to 20 million at least. There are several communities across the world, who just for the sheer love of the Christmas spirit and season love to decorate a tree for the season. But when, where, and how did this custom begin? What is the origin of the Christmas tree? What does it mean? There have been many answers to these questions that have been offered. Some make no distinction between history and legend. Unfortunately, none of them give sources for their assertions about the Christmas tree (a problem with most web articles!). Given that dependable scholarly sources about the history of the Christmas tree are hard to come by, citation-less Christmas tree web pages are understandable. What was the origin of the Christmas tree? As much as I would like to embrace as fact the oft- quoted story that Martin Luther was the first to set up a Christmas tree (or at least a lighted one), its not confirmed that this is a true story or a mere legend. There are no evidences that support this. There is scholarly consensus, however, that the Christmas tree originated in Germany. Indeed, the earliest record of an evergreen tree being used and decorated (but without lights) for Christmas is 1521 in the German region of Alsace. Another useful description has been found among the notes of an unknown resident of Strasbourg in 1605, who writes that “At Christmas they set up fir trees in the parlors at Strasburg and hang thereon roses cut of many- colored paper, apples, wafers, gold-foil, sweets . . .” Some fifty years later (about 1650) the great Lutheran theologian Johann Dannhauer wrote in his The Milk of the Catechism that “the Christmas or fir tree, which people set up in their houses, hang with dolls and sweets, and afterwards shake and deflower. . . When did this custom come into being is not known, but rather considered as a child’s bright imagination. They began to be known as Christmas trees and we identified them as Christmas trees since a very long time. It is perhaps the conical shape that houses many goodies and stockings that it is more popular with children. That Santa would probably find the best stocking and the best list put up by kids is legend has to say. There are many who agree that had the Christmas tree not been conical, it would be wee bit difficult to decorate it too. Since most celebration in most festivals is all about color and merry-making, so it is with the Christmas event as well.Several conclusions can be gleaned from these quotations. First, we are told some of the items with which the first Christmas trees were decorated: paper roses, apples, Communion wafers, gold, foil, sweets, and dolls. Second, even in 1650 a noted scholar like Dannhauer did not know the origin of Christmas trees. Third, not all Christians approved of these trees, even in the beginning. Fourth, the first Christmas trees, as far as we know, did not have lights. However, yea after year we notice that these are trees that bring in joy and peace to every house, as the spirit of Christms holds true for everyone, so I guess the tree is synonymous with the occasion.Come Yuletide an half the world is busy preparing things to make their festival the joyous occasion it is supposed to be. However, Christmastime can be quite an expensive time. The list of Christmas necessaries is quite long too, and for most Christian families, celebrating Christmas could put a yearend dent in the pocket with which they might have to usher in the New Year. That is the reason why artificial Christmas trees have become so popular. Artificial Christmas trees are much cheaper than the real stuff and can bring down Yuletide expenses significantly. Why are artificial Christmas trees so cheap then? Firstly, they are made of comparably cheap materials like plastic, feathers and even wires and sticks. These materials are strung on a central stem, which could be made of plastic or wood. The materials used in making the artificial Christmas tree make the trees lighter, and that helps in cutting down on transportation expenses. There are other ways in which artificial Christmas trees can help you economize on things. These trees are not perishable like the real ones, so you can keep them year after year. All artificial Christmas trees can be customized, so you can play with the lighting and decoration on the trees and make them look different each year. These trees are designed in a modular pattern, much like the playing blocks kids use. Hence, when the festive period is over, you can simply dismantle the tree and stock it in some corner of the house for the next year. But there are many other reasons why artificial Christmas trees are replacing the genuine conifers. The second most important reason, after the price, is the space. Artificial Christmas trees are made smaller in size so they can very well fit into the small apartment space that most people live in nowadays. However, infusing some creativity in decorating the tree can compensate their small size. These trees also take care of peripheral problems such as getting your home floor strewn with pine needles, or aggravating some allergies. So in order to make your artificial Christmas trees even better than the real thing, you can use these two simple tips:-For the decoration: Be imaginative. You can use cotton pieces to give your tree a snowy look, and can decorate them more by attaching small packed gift boxes on the branches of the trees. During Christmastime, you can get different kinds of decorating stuff, such as glitter balls, decorative artificial candy sticks and pieces of holly, which you can all use on the trees. For the lighting: Use some LED Christmas lights on the trees. LED Christmas lights are small, available on strings, and can be easily wound on the Christmas tree. They are cheap too, so you can have different sets of LED Christmas lights to put up on your trees each year. But then there are some things you need to know before investing in an artificial Christmas tree. Remember that artificial trees look artificial, so it is not a good idea to buy an artificial tree and camouflage it to look like a real one. It is best to let it look as it does and improve it with decoration. Also, there is a kind of down market mentality attached with artificial Christmas trees. Some people might snigger about having an artificial tree in your house. But if you know your creative skills well, you can make your artificial Christmas tree the talk of the season.

Canvas Prints make fantastic Christmas presents!

Canvas prints have now become the most popular form of artwork to decorate your home and put some colour on those blank walls.  You can so easily change the look of your room without completely redecorating – change the colour or theme just by changing the tired looking pictures and replacing them with eye-catching and vibrant canvas prints.

So what are canvas prints?

Original oil paintings (on canvas) from the old masters have been around for centuries but this relatively new concept of printing on canvas using wide-format printers was really only introduced in the 1990s.  With today’s technology the quality of these canvas prints – known as ‘giclée prints’ is almost as good as the original oil painting.  These printers use fade-resistant printer inks which mean that the canvas prints will last far longer than ordinary art prints but the greatest advantage is the ability to reproduce the original image in such detail regardless of size and maintain a high degree of accuracy in colour.  Hence – canvas prints – an affordable way of putting colourful canvas artwork on your walls.

Where can you find them?

Online shopping is the best way forward but there are a huge number of companies now supplying canvas prints so who to choose?  Many websites only offer ‘photos on canvas’ but there are a few digital printing companies that offer photographic gallery artwork as well.

CanvasRus is a well established online company who have been creating beautiful canvas prints for many years.  They can put your own photos on canvas or create canvas prints from over 800 fantastic photographic images in their 20 themed galleries all available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes.  All their canvas prints are printed on the highest quality canvas and then stretched by hand onto 50mm solid wooden stretchers.   All their canvas prints are fully laminated (completely free of charge – some companies charge for this service) enhancing the colours of the image and ensuring that the printed canvas has incredible durability.

Photos on Canvas

Or how about something more personal and memorable?  Choose your own favourite photo and have it made into a fantastic canvas print.  Everybody has one of those photos that gives you an ‘ahhh’ moment – well why hide it away?  Imagine how your loved one will feel when they see that special memory – whether the kids, pets, or on holiday, or even your own wedding – captured for ever on canvas.

And it’s so easy to order!  Just upload your digital photo to the website, choose your size and colour (choice of colour, B&W or sepia), pay online and hey presto, it’s done.  Ordering takes only minutes, and delivery a few days – maybe a little longer during the Christmas period due to high demand!

But what if you simply have too many photos to choose from?  Then order a Canvas Collage from CanvasRus.  They have a unique online facility where you can upload all your photos and see your collage come alive on screen, so if you’re not happy with the way it looks, just choose another photo and upload a different one.  There are 3 different layouts available each in 4 different sizes so again a wide range to choose from.

So don’t leave all those digital photos hibernating on your computer – start looking through them now and transform them into trendy Canvas Prints.

CanvasRus is a well established online company with many years experience in the digital printing industry, specializing in creating beautiful canvas prints from customers’ own photos or original artwork. They have been in the art, print and framing trade for over 20 years and started digital printing over 10 years ago launching the CanvasRus website in 2004 and were probably one of the first to offer photos on canvas to the retail public. Choosing and Caring for a Georgia-grown Christmas Tree

Written by admin

Choosing and Caring for a Georgia-grown Christmas Tree

Choosing and Caring for your Tree. Choosing a real Christmas tree is a fun outing for the whole family and easy to do. At Lovell Tree Farm, we would like to offer a few simple steps for selecting the perfect tree.

In most households, the holiday season didn’t begin until the family went to the local lot or tree farm to pick out their tree. Then, the whole family would decorate the tree. Gifts would be wrapped and placed underneath it. And, on Christmas morning, the family would once again join around the tree waiting for the festivities to begin. The scent, aroma, and the Real tree itself were an integral part of the family unity as well as the holiday season itself. This tradition continues to this day as more than 37 million families celebrate with a Real Christmas tree.

The celebrating of Christmas with a Real tree has been a tradition for over 400 years. At one time, all Christmas trees were cut from natural stands (or straight out of the forest). As you can imagine, these wild trees looked nothing like today’s professionally grown and sheared trees. Today, 98% of trees are grown on plantations. These plantations may sell them to local lots, or act as choose and cut farms where people go to select and cut down their own fresh tree.

To make your tradition a more memorable and pleasant one, we’d like to offer a few helpful hints when selecting a tree:

Do a freshness test.(This will not be needed if you are cutting the tree yourself as you know it is fresh.) Gently grasp a branch between your thumb and forefinger and pull it toward you. Very few needles should come off in your hand if the tree is fresh. Shake or bounce the tree on its stump. You should not see an excessive amount of green needles fall to the ground. Some loss of interior brown needles is normal and will occur over the lifetime of the tree.

Once you’ve chosen your tree, keep it in a sheltered, unheated area such as a porch or garage to protect it from the wind and sun until you are ready to set it up and decorate it.

Before you set up your tree, make a fresh, straight cut across the base of the trunk (about a quarter inch up from the original cut) and place the tree in a tree stand that holds a gallon or water or more.

Warning:Keep the tree stand filled with water. A seal of dried sap will form over the cut stump in four to six hours if the water drops below the base of the tree, preventing the tree from absorbing water later when the tree stand is refilled. If a seal does form, another fresh cut will need to be made.

Water the tree: A tree will absorb as much as a gallon of water or more in the first 24 hours and one or more quarts a day thereafter. Water is important because it prevents the needles from drying and dropping off and the boughs from drooping. Water also keeps the tree fragrant. Water prevents the tree from drying out and loosing color.

Other Do’s and Don’ts: In addition, keep your tree away from heat and draft sources like fireplaces, radiators and television sets. Test your light cords and connections before hanging them on the tree to make sure they’re in good working order. You don’t want to use cords with cracked insulation or broken or empty sockets. Also be sure to unplug the lights before you go to bed or leave the house. Never overload electrical circuits.

Sensible precautions such as these will help preserve the unique beauty and tradition that only a Real Christmas tree can provide.

Please come check out our high-quality crop of Leyland Cypress and Murrary Cypress Christmas Trees available at Lovell Tree Farm this upcoming Holiday season!

Outdoor Christmas Lighting | Outdoor Christmas Lighting Ideas

What’s Christmastime without a bit of decorative lighting sprinkled everywhere? Ah, the houses have to be bright enough for Santa Claus to maneuver his sleigh in the nighttime sky to the right houses and shove himself into the chimney, all laden with gifts! But, keeping Santa aside, the lights bring on a festive charm like nothing else can. Outdoor Christmas lights proclaim to all passers-by that you are celebrating the joy of the season. Your lights must definitely match this feeling of joy.Christmas lights come in several different forms, and you will really be confounded if you visit a store selling these lights. There are the basic round colored bulbs that have been used traditionally, but then there are many fancy shapes available nowadays. This year’s favorites seem to be the pearly bulbs, which are actually shaped round like pearls and given a glossy sheen on their outward surface to make them seem more so. Heart shaped bulbs are still present, and you will also find more thematic Christmas lights such as those shaped in the form of icicles, candies, and even holly and mistletoe! Now you have to select how much length of bulb strings you will require. Do not be a Scrooge about buying these bulb strings, especially since you are going to light up the entire exterior of your house, which includes the bushes and the brambles. Bulb strings are nonperishable, so you can stock them in your loft or attic and use them the next year too. You may even experiment with the same bulbs to give a wholly different look to the decoration. Anyways, you will be requiring adequate length to at least cover the front side of your house twice over. Add a few feet of bulb string to cover up for those unavoidable folds and knots you might have to make. If you are dressing up the bushes with outdoor Christmas lights too, then take good-sized length, because bushes have an undesirable habit of camouflaging most of the decorative lights. You can also get cute little lights for your crib. These are the LED Christmas lights, and they come in several different colors. A favorite is to line up the surface of the crib table with a string of LED Christmas lights. You can even add a router to the string to make these lights blink on and off. LED Christmas lights can also be put on the barks of your outdoor trees and can be lined around your flowerpots outside the house. You will, of course, need a wireman to put up the electric points for you outside the house. You can do the setting up of the light strings yourself later on (that’s the creative part anyways), but let the wireman pull out a line from inside the house and provide you with the connection. This is necessary, or you might have to spend Christmastime with a hairstyle resembling that of a freshly plucked turkey. The best part is putting up the lights. You can have a whole family thing here, with each one contributing in their way. Even the kiddies can help in handing out stuff when you are perched atop the stool to put up the lights. One of the most traditional ways is to run the light string along the edges of the house, but no one says you cannot experiment. You can use the LED Christmas lights to write out small messages like ‘Season’s Greetings’ on an outdoor wall of the house. If you have a fence, try getting the new fashion pipe Christmas lights to work on the top portion of the fence. Pipe lights work wonders with picket fences. The Christmas tree holds center stage for the week leading up to Christmas and the week after it. A lot of effort and resources is expended in procuring just the right tree for your house. But the irony is that not many people know of the history behind the tree and its origins. The individual responsible for the Christmas tree was Queen Charlotte, the German-born wife of George III, the “Mad King”. On Christmas Day 1800, she held a party for the children of Windsor, the centerpiece of which was Britain’s first recorded Christmas tree, a yew decorated with sweetmeats, toys and candles. But it became something that seemed like it was the prerogative of only the Royals. It was Prince Albert who turned them into a national one by propagating it thorough the national newspaper.Decorations for the Christmas tree have evolved over the years. Initially the idea was to fill it with all kinds of ornaments and colorful items. Then came the lights. Ostentationism was well entrenched in the Christmas tree culture. Nowadays Christmas trees are used to depict a certain aspect of your life i.e. hobbies, moods, frame of mind etc. It denotes something that is positive and full of hope. A wedding or baby theme can reflect the events of the past year or the year ahead. Current interests, activities and family events can be a source of themes that will add to family memories when viewed in the photo albums in the future. The arrival of a baby can be a theme.A step – by – step approach is required when decorating the Christmas tree. The most important step is to decide on the type of tree itself. The tree is usually chosen after the buyer looks at the number of branches and the way that they are shaped. He has to feel good about the tree at the outset. If each layer of branch has a staggered appearance, the process of decoration is expedited. Most trees with a fresh cut will drink many quarts of water in the first few hours, so check the water level in your tree stand several times a day.A Wilt resistant spray that can be applied to trees before bringing them indoors that claims to keep needles fresh for several weeks. Before getting down to the task of decorating the tree it is advisable to decide on the kind of effect that needs to be achieved. Ideally two sets of lights can be used. The shorter set will spiral around the trunk of the tree from top to bottom, while the longer version will spiral around the branches. The color scheme must ensure that the tree has a minimalist but grand look to it. It would be ideal if a two color scheme was employed. It could be a green, choice between green, gold, purple and red. Place the main color on the tips of the branches and the secondary color deeper into the tree, giving depth to the display. However if the minimalist look is to be eschewed, then many ornaments can be used. At least dozen “filler” ornaments for every 2 feet of tree can be used. These can be inexpensive glass balls readily available at discount stores. There is no point decorating the back of the tree, as it will not be visible in any case. Strands of beads can be looped over the ends of the branches. If the beads have a glossy finish, it would be great as it would reflect the light all over the room. Finally at the top of the tree, the most important ornament must be added. This is something that symbolizes the spirit of Christmas, so it must be unique as well as elegant. Stars and angels have been some of the popular choices in the past. Now that the tree is made, there arises the problem of the tree stand. If the tree stand is visible it could spoil the entire display and take away the magic of the moment. It is imperative that the stand remains covered at all times.

Christmas Tree Farms Benefit the Environment

The Christmas Trees we grow benefit the environment.

Choose & Cut Christmas Tree Farms, such as Lovell Tree Farm, benefit the environment long before you take home the tree for the Holidays.

Real Christmas trees are a benefit to the environment from the time they are planted until after the holiday season when they can be recycled.

While growing,Real Christmas trees support life by absorbing carbon dioxide and other gases and emitting fresh oxygen. This helps prevent the earth-warming greenhouse effect.

Every acre of Christmas trees grown produces the daily oxygen requirement for 18 people. In the United States there are approximately 1 million acres of growing Christmas trees; that means that 18 million people a day are supplied with oxygen thanks to Christmas trees.

The farms that grow Christmas trees stabilize soil, protect water supplies, and provide refuge for wildlife while creating scenic green belts. Often, Christmas trees are grown on soil that are marginal for other crop.

After Christmas, Real Christmas trees are often recycled and have many uses.

Christmas trees are biodegradable — the trunk and branches can be used as mulch for gardens, parks or in animal stalls. The mulch provides a protective barrier for the roots of other plants and vegetation while preventing weeds from growing. The mulch then decomposes, providing the nutrients plants need to thrive.

Recycling programs are a fast – growing trend in communities throughout the nation. Ask the tree farmer where you purchase a tree.

Some communities use Christmas trees to make effective sand and soil erosion barriers, especially at beaches and on river beds. Sunk into private fish ponds trees make excellent refuge and feeding areas for fish.

Before recycling, Christmas trees can be used to make bird feeders, adding color and excitement to the winter garden. Utilize orange slices, suet, and seed to attract the birds. They will come for the food and stay for the shelter in the branches.

REMEMBER TO ALWAYS REMOVE DECORATIONS, ORNAMENTS, AND WIRES FROM THE TREE YOU ARE RECYCLING.
